Compress vs resize — pick the right lever

Compress lowers quality or encoding efficiency so the same dimensions take fewer kilobytes. If a portal says “max 200 KB” or “under 1 MB,” start here. If it says “max 2000×2000 pixels,” resize first, then compress.

How to hit a target size

Use the quality slider for gradual savings, or open a preset like compress to 50 KB / 100 KB when a site documents an exact limit. Photos tolerate more compression than screenshots with tiny text — watch the live preview before you download.

Format choices that save space

  • JPG — best default for camera photos.
  • WebP — usually smaller than JPG at similar quality when the destination accepts it.
  • PNG — keep for graphics with sharp edges or transparency; compressing PNG helps less than converting photos to JPG/WebP.
